Angkor was an urban landscape as well as a temple complex. Barays, canals, embankments, moats and gates moved and stored water across a large area shaped by monsoon rains and long dry periods.
The East and West Barays are the most visible reservoirs, but smaller channels and temple moats reveal how sacred design, settlement and water management overlapped. Modern mapping has made the network easier to understand.
The system still matters. APSARA manages water to protect monuments, communities and Siem Reap from drought and flooding, and in 2026 prepared new remote water-gate equipment for the network.

More than giant reservoirs
The East and West Barays are only the largest visible pieces of a network that included moats, canals, ponds, embankments and natural channels. Water supported households, ritual landscapes and agriculture while also threatening low areas during intense rain. Scholars continue to refine how different components worked across Angkor’s long history.
What to notice on a temple day
Causeways often cross moats whose scale becomes clearer from the side than from the entrance. At Angkor Thom, bridges, gates and surrounding water form one system. Around smaller temples, look for ground level, drainage openings and the direction of nearby channels. These observations turn a temple circuit into a reading of landscape engineering.
Ancient infrastructure, modern responsibility
APSARA’s rehabilitation work must balance archaeological evidence, flood protection, water supply, vegetation and living communities. A repaired gate or cleared canal is not simply modern landscaping; it can protect foundations and neighbourhoods. Visitors should obey barriers around channels and maintenance works even when no staff member is visible.
A slower way to explore
Combine one major temple with a reservoir edge, village route or interpretation from a licensed guide instead of collecting ten façades in a day. Morning and late afternoon light reveals topography more clearly. Never use remote banks as unofficial vehicle tracks, and avoid swimming where access, depth or water quality is uncertain.
Water and monument survival
Too much water can erode soil, destabilise foundations and flood communities; too little can change ground conditions and stress vegetation. Conservation teams therefore monitor flows rather than simply filling picturesque moats. Cleaning a channel or operating a gate can be preventive monument care. Visitors should not build small dams, move stones, fish, wash or dispose of waste in archaeological water features, even when the water appears ordinary.
Questions for a guide
Ask how the barays relate to the surrounding terrain, which channels are ancient, how researchers date modifications and what modern interventions are visible. There is no need to accept one grand theory explaining every reservoir. Angkor changed over centuries, and water infrastructure was built, repaired, redirected and sometimes abandoned. A guide who explains competing interpretations offers more value than one who presents a single dramatic claim as settled fact.
A water-focused route
View Angkor Wat’s moat at quiet morning light, trace the causeway and surrounding water at Angkor Thom, then visit a baray edge or smaller temple where topography is easier to read. Use authorised roads and stopping places; embankments are not automatic parking areas. An offline satellite view can help orient the scale before travel, but on-site rules and guide knowledge must determine where you actually walk.
